Thermoformer Macpac is celebrating its 50 anniversary in 2023 as one of the UK’s largest privately-owned manufacturers in the sector. At #fots2023 you can find them on a new stand location in House D – stands D18 + D19.
Founded in 1973 by Chris Kershaw, father of the current owner and managing director, Graham Kershaw, the company was born out of the demand to produce packaging for Dinky Toys and Meccano and operated on the first floor of an old printing mill. With the invention of ‘thermoforming’, growth was rapid and in the 1970s the business re-located to Macclesfield (a stones’ throw from Four Oaks Nursery) out of which the name Macpac was born.
After working overseas for a decade on robot control systems, Graham returned to the family business in 1997 and Macpac started to modernise its company’s processes, thereby introducing Computerised Numerical Control machines (CNCs) into the toolroom. This departure from traditional cast aluminium toolmaking provided CAD/CAM machining and sped up the whole process.
In 2000, Chris Kershaw stepped back from the business and Graham became the new managing director. 2003 saw the start of a transition away from PVC due to recycling issues, and Macpac began to get involved with rPET.
